Yorkville seeking options for trash collection

Yorkville officials are hoping to add additional services for on-demand electronic pickup curbside composting to city’s trash collection program.

“We go out for request for proposal every two years,” said Erin Willrett, interim assistant city administrator. “Our current contract with the hauler is up in April 2017.”

The Yorkville City Council last week approved a measure that allows officials to start the process of seeking contract proposals for solid waste collection.

Sealed bids will be read by city officials, at which point they will decide which prospective hauler will be awarded the contract.

If approved, the duration of that service will start May 2017 and run until April 30, 2022.

“We know that’ll be intriguing for residents,” Willrett said. “It gives them the option to throw [electronics] away through their waste hauler, rather than dropping it off.”

Willrett said other municipalities have also used curbside composting program, and we thought it would be nice to allow for that.
