Yorkville Plan Commission, Zoning Board to merge

July 7, 2016

The Yorkville Plan Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals will be merging into a single group.

The City Council voted unanimously for the move. The new group will be called the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Yorkville created the Plan Commission in 1962 and the Zoning Board of Appeals in 1974.

In recent years, a number of nearby communities have established combined groups, including Oswego, Wheaton, Lisle and South Elgin. The main reason was to streamline the process for reviewing projects.

As part of the proposal, the new commission will have seven appointed members who will address all matters previously conducted separately by the Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals.

"I think this is awesome," Ald. Joel Frieders said. "If you have ever been a part of the process to go from an idea to a reality, the biggest hurdle is getting a bunch of unpaid people to show up to a meeting that they volunteered to be a part of three years prior. I think it's kind of exciting to kind of combine them."

Meetings of the new commission will require at least four members be present to pass a recommendation on to the mayor and City Council.
